What is Spiritual Direction?

According to where I was trained, “Spiritual Direction is the process of exploring and understanding the interior world of another, following the Spirit’s work in transforming the person’s interior world to become more like Christ. A one-on-one session offers an objective, non-judgmental space where you can talk freely and openly about the things on your heart and mind and receive valuable insight from a trained fellow sojourner.”

I am a member of the Spiritual Directors International (SDI) and the Spiritual Directors in Europe (SDE) and SDI says this about Spiritual Direction:

Spiritual direction, as defined by

Spiritual Directors International (SDI), is a one-on-one relationship where one person (the directee) meets with a more experienced person (the spiritual director) to explore and deepen their relationship with the Divine or their personal spirituality. This supportive process helps individuals listen for God's initiative in their life, gain spiritual insight, and respond more fully to the Sacred in their daily experiences.

Key aspects of spiritual direction

  • Focus on deepening a relationship: The primary goal is to foster a more profound connection with God or the ultimate reality, moving beyond a superficial understanding.

  • A supportive relationship: It is a guided, confidential relationship that offers a safe space for conversation and reflection, without judgment or proselytizing.

  • Active listening and questioning: The director listens attentively to the directee's experiences and uses insightful questions to help them reflect and gain clarity.

  • Discernment and growth: Through intentional conversation, the directee can discern their spiritual path, goals, and how to live out their deepest values in response to the Divine.

  • A practice across traditions: While rooted in Christian tradition, SDI recognizes that spiritual direction is a practice found in many faith traditions and can be called spiritual companionship, spiritual friendship, or other terms.

  • A process, not a one-time event: It is typically an ongoing relationship, with meetings occurring regularly, such as once a month.

I would add that Group Spiritual Direction is also an option (and is adjusted to fit the group… sometimes it is for a shorter period, such as Advent or Lent, or it could be on-going.

I am also looking for spiritual directors to be their supervisor (I have a SDI certificate in spiritual director supervision).

Spiritual Director Supervision, according to the SDI is “Supervision is a reflective practice. A spiritual director engaged in supervision will take time after a spiritual direction session to become aware and notice what transpired with a seeker and what continues to hold energy within the spiritual director following the session. This then becomes the focus of the spiritual director’s reflection, first alone and then with another spiritual director or peer group.

The supervision process invites the spiritual director to take time to explore what is beneath the surface: to better understand oneself, to discover how best to accompany seekers, and to acknowledge how Spirit is present and active in the spiritual direction relationship.

The goal of supervision is to assist the spiritual director to become more supportive and skilled in accompanying the seeker in a relationship with Mystery who many name God”
