I am a member of the Spiritual Directors International and they say this about Spiritual Direction:

Spiritual direction, as defined by

Spiritual Directors International (SDI), is a one-on-one relationship where one person (the directee) meets with a more experienced person (the spiritual director) to explore and deepen their relationship with the Divine or their personal spirituality. This supportive process helps individuals listen for God's initiative in their life, gain spiritual insight, and respond more fully to the Sacred in their daily experiences.

Key aspects of spiritual direction

Focus on deepening a relationship: The primary goal is to foster a more profound connection with God or the ultimate reality, moving beyond a superficial understanding.
A supportive relationship: It is a guided, confidential relationship that offers a safe space for conversation and reflection, without judgment or proselytizing.
Active listening and questioning: The director listens attentively to the directee's experiences and uses insightful questions to help them reflect and gain clarity.
Discernment and growth: Through intentional conversation, the directee can discern their spiritual path, goals, and how to live out their deepest values in response to the Divine.
A practice across traditions: While rooted in Christian tradition, SDI recognizes that spiritual direction is a practice found in many faith traditions and can be called spiritual companionship, spiritual friendship, or other terms.
A process, not a one-time event: It is typically an ongoing relationship, with meetings occurring regularly, such as once a month.

I would add that Group Spiritual Direction is also an option (and is adjusted to fit the group… sometimes it is for a shorter period, such as Advent or Lent, or it could be on-going.

As a Supervisor and mentoring supervisor in training for my coaching and supervision association, I am exploring and looking for spiritual directors to practice with as a supervisor.
